Range Rover Club Victoria

All vehicle makes welcome – it’s not about the cars - it’s about the people

Range Rover Club of Victoria

The Range Rover Club of Victoria is one of Victoria’s longest-established 4WD Clubs having been founded in 1977, originally of Range Rover owners only. Over the years the Melbourne based 4WD club has grown to embrace owners of all makes of 4WD vehicles and people from all walks of life brought together by a love of the great outdoors and a sense of off-road adventure!

The RRCV of today it is a family oriented four wheel drive touring club that supports a diverse range of interests and vehicles of all types. Whether you like harder High Country trips, fixed based camping or long outback touring trips our Trip Calendar has something for you. We aim to provide our Members with a wide range of activities and actively promote social, recreational and safe four wheel driving.

Our trips cater for drivers and families of all experiences levels. Indeed not all our trips involve four wheel driving. We also aim to get together regularly for social events such as winery tours and restaurant nights. We also provide driver training; via our FWDV accredited instructors.

Club meetings are held at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of most months and are currently a blend of face-to-face and online, via Zoom - where 30-40 members catch up each month. Our monthly club meetings are held at The Glasshouse (31 Station St Caulfield East, 3145) at Caulfield Racecourse. Many members turn up early to eat at the bistro beforehand.

If you are interested in 4WDing in and around Melbourne, Victoria or behind, contact our Membership Secretary if you want to join the meeting memberships@rangeroverclub.org.au

Check out the calendar for more details and our new venue, and then come along and see what we’re about! (let us know you're coming so we can look out for you).

By the way, if you thought that we're just Range Rovers, check this out!  It's not about the cars, it's about the people.

    Dargo Base Camp

Date and time:  9:00am, Saturday 7th March to 1:00pm Monday 9th March

Description:  For many years RRCV has held a base camp at Dargo on the Labour Day weekend in March.  Again, in 2026 we will stay at the Dargo River Inn campground.  The Labour Day weekend is always popular, so if you are thinking about going to Dargo and want to book a cabin, a powered site, my advice is that you do this ASAP.

For those new to this event, the Dargo area has a lot of history, as well as very spectacular scenery and great 4WD tracks.  ALL MEMBERS are welcome.

This is a basecamp for 3 nights: Friday, Saturday & Sunday.  Bring your own tent, camper or caravan.  We will cater for all 4WDriving skill levels, from novice to experienced drivers, so there will be trips with varying degrees of difficulty.  Trips will be decided closer to the weekend when weather and track conditions are known but there will be several different trips occurring each day, returning to base camp each afternoon.

Before the Saturday night dinner, we would like to have people coming to a common area for some pre-dinner drinks and nibbles (byo drinks and a small plate to share).  We will also make a booking for the Sunday night at the River Inn for a pub meal.

Dargo is approached via Princes Highway through Sale and Stratford.  Approx. 23 km past Stratford turn towards Fernbank, follow signs to Dargo (take care on the Dargo road especially if towing).  The Dargo River Inn situated on the Lower Dargo Road and is well signposted.  Turn right just past the 80 Kph restriction sign as you enter the Dargo township.  Please try to arrive at the caravan park anytime on Friday or before 8:30 am on Saturday.  In the park, follow the RRCV signs – the Trip Leaders will be there to meet you.

Caravan Park Bookings:  You will need to book your accommodation with the Dargo River Inn directly, book through their web site at www.dargoriverinn.com.au or ph +613 5140 1330.  We have made arrangements for our group to occupy an area with both powered and unpowered sites, so make sure you mention that you are with the Range Rover 4WD club so you are allocated a site with our group.  If you want to book a cabin or a powered site, you will need to book fairly early, since this is a popular weekend in Dargo.  There is a large area for unpowered sites, so if you don’t require power there is less urgency.

The water in the caravan park is untreated river water, so it is advisable to bring your own drinking water.  There are flushing toilets and hot showers at the caravan park.

If you wish to come early or stay longer you can arrange this as part of your booking, although there should be no problems with these requests.

Weather:  Alpine environment, potentially cold and wet.  Bring appropriate clothing and footwear.  We have had wet weather in the past, so please review the weather forecast for the Alpine area prior to the event and bring clothing, footwear and camping gear suitable for the conditions.

Equipment:  Well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good clearance (200mm recommended as a minimum), good off-road tyres (All Terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, shovel and UHF radio (or let me know if you need one borrowed from the club).

Dargo is quite remote and the tracks we will be driving are steep, rocky and challenging, so vehicle failures / repairs / recovery can be difficult and expensive.  Please do a thorough vehicle check beforehand and if in doubt, have your vehicle serviced and thoroughly checked by a mechanic familiar with 4WDriving.

We have had vehicle breakdowns and breakages in the past and RACV Total Care has been excellent in transporting vehicles for repair or back to Melbourne.  It is recommended you take out this cover as insurance prior to the trip

Hat, torch, good footwear, warm clothes (cold nights), NAME TAGS, kids bikes.

Simple, “on the move” lunches and morning teas (byo thermos), food for 3 days, drinking water and port.

DO NOT bring:  Pets, firearms, or motorbikes.

Trip Standard:  Medium to Hard – some steep, low-range hill climbs and some rocky tracks!

Fuel: Fuel on the way and available at Dargo (no LPG).

Distance:  Dargo is approximately 320 km (4 to 5 hours) from Melbourne.  Trips each day are from 50Km to 90 Km of mainly low range driving.

Convoy limit:  None.  This trip will cater for large numbers.

Meeting Arrangements:  Base Camp at the Dargo River Inn, Lower Dargo Road, Dargo.  Dargo is approximately 4 to 5 hours from Melbourne.  There will be a driver briefing at 8:30 am on Saturday morning, ready for a 9:00 am departure.  If you plan to arrive on Saturday morning, please allow time to air down and be ready for the 9:00 am departure.

East Arnhem, Garma and Kakadu NP July/August 2026

Date and time:  9:00am, Friday 24 July 2026 departing from Mataranka, NT, to Saturday 22 August 2026, from Kakadu NP.

Trip Standard:  Medium - a mix of easy and some sandy tracks. Some river crossings.

Description:  I am looking for people interested on this trip and I need responses by mid-January. As you will see below, we need to apply for Garma volunteering by late January.

The trip will involve volunteering at the Garma Festival in East Arnhem Land, near Nhulunbuy, for two weeks followed by a few days exploring around Nhulunbuy and eight or ten days exploring Kakadu NP.

The Garma Festival itself is from 31 July to 3 August, and volunteering is roughly a week before and afterwards to help set up and break down for the event. Your experiences there will be extraordinary. You can check out the website at https://yyf.com.au/garma-festival/about-garma-festival/. Whilst on-site at Garma, we will be provided with accommodation (tent, mattress and sleeping bag) and all food.

Before leaving East Arnhem, we will explore some of the pristine bush, creeks and coastline. We will either stay in remote campsites or camp in Nhulunbuy. There are some restrictions to bush camping that we will have to navigate. Check out the area at https://www.dhimurru.com.au/visiting-recreation-areas.html

After two day’s drive back to Katherine, we will prepare for ten days or so in Kakadu NP. I would like to include a full day visit into Gunbalanya, West Arnhem, from Jabiru to visit some significant Aboriginal cultural sites. Check out https://kakadu.gov.au and https://injalak.com/book-tour/

We will finish the trip around 22 August at Kakadu. Since this is advanced planning, there will be some flexibility.

What we know now:  The dates for Garma are set. Applications to volunteer will open in late January. We will each have to apply individually at that time and I will send out reminders. Once we have all applied, I will email the Yothu Yindi Foundation (YYF) to advise them that we are all in a single group and who the partners are. That way, they will be able to consider us as a group and hopefully approve our applications.

There are many permits that we must acquire. I’ll lead that process in good time.

The cultural tour at Gunbalanya is four hours and we must drive in and out from Jabiru on the same day. There is no camping at Gunbalanya. There is a maximum of 10 people per tour group.

    Weather:  Hot and beautiful.

Equipment:  Below are the recommended vehicle requirements.   If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for a trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.

Good off-road tyres (All Terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club), a well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good ground clearance (200mm recommended as a minimum), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, shovel and sand tracks.  Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.

Additional Equipment required Camping gear food and drinking water for a month of camping.  Clothing for hot conditions.  Lots of hydralite.  There’ll be plenty of opportunity for restocking along the way.

Camper trailers are OK and must have off-road capability.

Maps and Reference Material:  Refer to the websites above.

Fuel:  Extra fuel for the Central Arnhem Road.  This is nearly 800 km of gravel, mostly OK but many corrugations and potholes full of bulldust.  There may be fuel along the road but don’t bet on it.

Distance:  Our start point is Mataranka, 3327 km from Melbourne!.

    Duration:  A month or so

Convoy limit:  6 vehicles.  Only ten of us will be able to do the Gunbalanya tour, so we’ll work out numbers and logistics later.

Meeting arrangements:  We will meet at Mataranka visitor centre and depart at 9.00am.  We can arrange camping the night before at Elsey NP.

    Trip Leader:  Graeme Bartle-Smith, 0415 698 198 and graemebs@gmail.com

Club Guest Registration policy:  It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event.

i.e.  non- members can no longer register on the day with the trip leader.
Temporary Membership information and ways to register can be found at:

    Temporary (Guest) Membership

Also if a non-member wishes to bring their own vehicle, the member inviting the non-member must contact the trip leader for approval to bring the vehicle. Such approval will take into account skills of the driver, suitability of the vehicle and whether or not a place within the convoy limit is available for a non-member's vehicle.
