Invasive species removal with Friends of Brisbane Ranges

Trip Standard: Easy, mainly well-formed gravel country roads.

Date and time:  10:00am – 3:00 pm Sunday 25 Aug 2024

Description:  This is a combined event hosted by the Friends of Brisbane Ranges (FoBR).  We will be capitalizing on some recent invasive species control work by VicRoads along the Geelong-Ballan Road by removing Sallow Wattle (Acacia longifolia) within the National Park.  Sallow wattle is native to NSW and has been found to be invasive in some parts of Victoria such as Brisbane Ranges and Grampians. 

The meeting location and briefing will be conducted at Jack Dillon Reserve where we will then drive a short distance to the work location.

Weather:  Melbourne / Anakie in late winter can be variable weather.  Review the weather forecast for the district and bring appropriate clothing and footwear.

Equipment A well-maintained vehicle with normal road tyres is suitable for this trip where access from meeting location to the site is on well-formed dirt / gravel roads. 

Additional Equipment:  personal protective equipment & tools

  • Sturdy shoes / boots, long pants and long sleeve shirts are highly recommended for walking off track in bushland with an understory of saplings and shrubs, thick grassed areas.
  • BYO thick gardening gloves and eye protection.
  • BYO tools (any of the following):  pruning saw or bow saw, pruning loppers, if you own a reciprocating / sabre saw with a pruning blade bring this along.  The diameter of plant material varies from a few millimetres which can often be pulled by hand up to 150mm.

Phytophthora Cinnamomi controls:  Small stiff bristle brush, Spray bottle with a mixture of 70% Methylated Spirits / 30% water.

BYO food and drinking water for lunch and breaks.

Fuel: A full tank ex Melbourne

Distance:  Anakie is approx. 80 km west of Melbourne.

Duration: 1/2 day

Convoy limit: 8 vehicles

Meeting location / assembly point and facilities: 

We will meet at the Jack Dillon Reserve.  (if navigating with google maps the reserve is also known as Harry Peeters Reserve)  Geelong-Ballan Rd, Durdidwarrah, Vic 3342.  The reserve has public toilets with accessible ramp, BBQs and covered shelter.

Club Guest Registration policy:  It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event. 
i.e.  non- members can no longer register on the day with the trip leader.

Also if a non-member wishes to bring their own vehicle, the member inviting the non-member must contact the trip leader for approval to bring the vehicle. Such approval will take into account skills of the driver, suitability of the vehicle and whether or not a place within the convoy limit is available for a non-member's vehicle.
