R. Pepper – Trek 1 – Brisbane Ranges

Date and time:  Tuesday 14/May starting at 10:00 am

Description:  This trek won’t require a winch, mud tyres or even low range; it is a beautiful, winding drive through woody forest. The track covers hills, rocky gorges and scenic ridges. Along the way there are some great views of Port Phillip Bay.

The Brisbane Ranges National Park is popular with campers and day-trippers alike. There are several pretty campsites and picnic areas which vary in size. The camping areas nearer the entrances of the national park can become quite crowded. Roads through the park are maintained and unsealed, making this trek an ideal first outing for those new to off roading or wishing to try out a new vehicle.

There are also quite a number of bushwalks varying in distance from 2.5 to 8 kilometres as well as the three- day-long Burchell Trail. No matter how you choose to explore the park, the higher elevations provide you with some great chances to admire the views towards Geelong and Melbourne..

Weather:  e.g.  Melbourne region in May – could be anything

Equipment:  e.g.  Vehicles will not need to have low range 4WD capability.  Suitable for AWD vehicles.  UHF radio equipped (or one borrowed from the club).  Usual recovery gear should be carried.

Trip Standard:  Easy, though the roads can be narrow and blind. Slow down, select low gears for descents and remember there is much less traction on dirt roads. After heavy rain there may be minor river crossings over concrete causeways. Any AWD will have adequate clearance and angles.

Fuel:  a full tank from home

Distance:  Approx. distance of 180 Km, round trip from Melbourne CBD.

Duration: 1 day

Convoy limit: 10 vehicles

Meeting arrangements:  e.g.  We will depart at 10 am from Bacchus Marsh from the front of Jimmy’s Fish Shop, 171 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.  There is a place opposite called Angelo’s bakery where you can grab a coffee before we go. If you plan to get coffee beforehand then you will need to arrive a little earlier.  We will aim to finish about 4.00pm in Anakie
