4WD Treks Close to Melbourne: Validation of trek 2 - Wombat Wanderings & trek 9 Lerderderg Sojourn

Date and time:  9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sunday 11th February

Trip Standard:  Medium (9) some difficult sections including, low-range.  Easy (2) forest roads

Description:  We will be running trek 9 first and then onto trek 2 as 9 will finish in Blackwood and 2 will start in Blackwood.  These two Treks will be combined in a one-day trip on Sunday 11th February 2024.

Trek 9 – Lerderderg Sojourn (approx. 50kms) – Carrolls Lane Bullengarook to Blackwood (Medium) In the morning we will commence on Carrolls Lane which is approx. 21km north of Bacchus Marsh on the Bacchus Marsh Gisborne Road.  Then into the Lerderderg State Park.  This trek follows O’Briens Rd, past O’Briens Crossing, onto Morning Star Track and then into Blackwood for our lunch stop at the Blackwood Pub.

Trek 2 - Wombat Wanderings (approx. 30kms) - Blackwood to Daylesford (Easy).  After lunch we head out of Blackwood and wind our way briefly on the black top into a valley for an Easy afternoon mainly on forest roads.  We head onto the Wombat Forest Drive, which more or less follows the Lerderderg River.  Later we pass Wombat Creek Picnic Area before arriving in Daylesford.

Weather:  This time of year, we would expect it to be quite warm to very hot so ensure you bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat!

Equipment:  Vehicles need to have low range 4WD capability with good all-terrain tyres and UHF radio equipped (or one borrowed from the club).  Usual recovery gear should be carried.

Coffee stops will be in the bush – byo morning teas and thermos. Lunch will be at the Blackwood Pub.

Fuel:  Full tank ex Melbourne / fuel available in Bacchus Marsh

Distance: Total – approx. 260km Treks 9 & 2 – total approx. 80km Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh – approx. 60kms.   Daylesford to Melbourne – approx. 120kms.

Duration:  1 day

Convoy limit:  10 vehicles

Meeting arrangements:  We will depart at 9am from Carrolls lane.  We will finish about 4pm in Daylesford.

Club Guest Registration policy:  It is club policy in regard to insurance cover that if a member brings any non-members on the trip they must be registered and have paid the required fee as Temporary Members BEFORE the event. 
i.e.  non- members can no longer register on the day with the trip leader.

Also if a non-member wishes to bring their own vehicle, the member inviting the non-member must contact the trip leader for approval to bring the vehicle. Such approval will take into account skills of the driver, suitability of the vehicle and whether or not a place within the convoy limit is available for a non-member's vehicle.
