Toolangi and Magic Murrindindi 4WD, bushwalking and photography
Date and time: 9:00 am – 04:30 pm Saturday, 12th July 2025
Description: Please contact your trip leader if you are unsure of any of the below requirements for this trip.
Easy day trip through the scenic Toolangi and Murrindindi region, perfect for 4WD and photography enthusiasts. The route primarily follows two treks from Robert Pepper’s book: Trek 4: 'Toolangi South’ and Trek 5: 'Magic Murrindindi’. It’s a straightforward drive along well-formed forestry roads, offering stunning landscapes and plenty of opportunities to capture the magic of winter in the bush.
We’ll make a few stops and have short walks to:
- Wirrawilla Rainforest (approx. 1 hour for photos)
- Murrindindi Cascades
- Wilhelmina Falls
Each stop offers excellent photo opportunities. I’ll be happy to share tips for anyone interested in improving their photography skills. If you have a tripod, bring it along — it’s especially helpful for capturing forest scenes and waterfalls.
Weather: Toolangi and Black Range State Forests area in winter can be colder and wet. The trip will go ahead regardless of weather conditions (except of heavy rainfall). In fact, rain enhances the natural beauty of the area — the forest becomes more lush green, and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular. Check the weather forecast before departure and bring appropriate clothing and footwear.
Equipment: Below are the recommended vehicle requirements. If you are not sure if your vehicle is suitable for this trip, please have a chat with the trip leader.
A well-maintained 4WD vehicle. Normal road tyres are suitable for this trip in dry conditions. All Terrain tyres are required if conditions are wet. A UHF radio is required (you may bring your own or borrow one from the club). Bring your standard recovery gear kit, including rated snatch strap, shackles, recovery boards and a shovel.
This is an easy trek under dry conditions. However, after rain, the roads can become wet, slippery, and may have puddles, so please be prepared for changing terrain.
Drivers must have completed the RRCV club training or equivalent.
Meals: Morning tea and lunch stops will be in the bush – BYO simple meals, snacks, water and thermos (can be cold).
No camper trailers, pets or firearms.
