An opportunity to learn about the bush.

This is trip 2 of two duplicate day trips over the same weekend.

NOTE: This is a joint trip with the Land Rover Owners Club and the Pajero 4WD Clubs. So please add your name to the wait list until we know how many people can go from the Range Rover Club.

Over a number of decades we have travelled in, camped in, driven in and just enjoyed the beautiful Toolangi Forest. Our interests have included studying the flora and fauna and the challenges facing our bush. We have led many club trips in the area and around Victoria

Through our travels, connections made and interests we have become aware of the increased level of clearfell logging in the area, including the last remaining habitat of Victoria’s only endemic mammal, the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum plus the habitat of the Greater Glider, also known as the flying koala and now listed as vulnerable. Whilst you need a specialised thermal imaging camera, a good guide, patience and luck to help you see these animals at night, this is an opportunity to learn about their lives and the environment they live in.

We are inviting club members (new members and families welcome) to join us on one of our easy day trips into the forest to experience the rainforest, see the tallest flowering trees on earth (and what could be the tallest trees on earth if left to grow), perhaps see and hear a lyre bird and some yellow tailed black cockatoos, share knowledge about our bush and see how our bush and access is being managed.

Of particular interest is the Kalatha Giant, a mountain ash tree thought to be around 400 years old, the 7th known largest tree in Victoria and voted as the National Trust Inaugural Tree of the Year. The walk to the tree was built by the local community with post 2009 bushfire funding. This is a popular attraction in the Toolangi area and imminent commencement of logging of the South Col coupe, an area that has never been logged and adjacent to the popular tree is a concern to both locals and visitors. We will also discuss the issues of tourism, water catchment and severity of fires particular to these forests.

Bring a picnic lunch, water and snacks for the day. Wear boots and clothing suitable for short walks and the wet and cold mountain weather.

2 one day, day trips.

Saturday 8/7/17 or Sunday 9/7/17
