Australia Day (extra) long weekend 2021 East Gippsland, 23-26th Jan

Date and time:  9:00 Sat. 23 January 2021 to Tuesday 26th January 2021

Description:  On this trip we will be exploring the Errinundra Plateau and the Snowy River National Park and surrounds.  This trip will incorporate most of the 4WD Victoria Snowy River Iconic River Drive and will include both easy touring tracks and some more challenging high country tracks.

The trip will start from Goongerah Camp Ground 9am on Saturday morning and will begin with a tour of Errinundra featuring big trees and lookouts, returning to Goongerah mid-afternoon before we head west to the Raven Creek Campground.

Day two will cover the first (and more challenging) half of the Snowy River Iconic drive including scenic forest driving and craggy high-country ridge tracks with panoramic views. We will finish the day at Little River Junction Camp, a very scenic camping spot by the Snowy River close to McKillop’s Bridge.

Day 3 will take us from the Deddick valley up to Tingaringay track with a visit to Mount Tingaringay – good high country scenic views and some good steep driving.

Day 4 will be a short day of fairly easy touring with stop-off to look at the Little River Gorge en-route taking us to Buchan by early afternoon, leaving time to get back to Melbourne.

Weather:  Alpine environment, potentially cold and wet.  We have had wet weather and snow in the past, so please bring clothing, footwear and camping gear suitable for the conditions and keep an eye on the weather forecast for the Alpine area.

Equipment:  a well-maintained vehicle with low range (or equivalent), good ground clearance (200mm recommended as a minimum), good off-road tyres (All Terrain, 60 profile recommended as a minimum), UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club), recovery points, standard recovery gear including dampener, rated snatch strap and shackles, shovel.  Bring MaxTrax (or the like) if you have them.

Please leave pets at home.

Additional Equipment required:  Camping gear, food and water for 4 days in the bush.  Clothing for wet and cold conditions.  Morning tea and lunch will be in the bush each day – byo thermos, etc.

Trip Standard:   Medium - Most of the main tracks will be easy-medium but there may be track sections that are more difficult depending upon weather and conditions. A chance to develop some skills!

Fuel:  Full tank from Orbost. There are no other refueling opportunities between here and the last day of the trip so you may need to take Jerry-cans of additional fuel if you don’t have long range tanks.  Total distance is up to 550km at your off-road fuel consumption rates.
