SA/Vic Border Track - Easter 2009

10 Apr 2009 - 00:00
13 Apr 2009 - 23:59

The plan is to leave Ouyen on the Friday morning at 9am and travel through parts of the Murray Sunset NP visiting places like Pink Lakes, Mopoke Hut and Rocket Lake and wind our way through to the Sturt Highway. Travelling west, we will then turn at the Border Track and work our way south visiting Big Desert Wilderness Park and eventually coming out onto the Western Highway on the Monday.

Camping spots will depend on progress.

If it is hot, the sand will be very soft and the going could be hard.

Supplies can be obtained in Pinnaroo (about half-way from the Sturt Highway to the Western Highway) but we will be in quite a remote area – you need to ensure you have adequate food and water for at least 4 days. It is quite unlikely that we will have wood campfires – please bring your own cooking fuel (eg gas stoves).

Days can be very hot and nights very cold – please bring appropriate clothing and camping gear.

Vehicles should be in very good mechanical condition – spares appropriate for a remote trip (although short) should be carried. You will need to carry fuel for about 300kms of travelling, much of it in soft sand. If you have a dune flag, please bring it.

Off-Road Trailers can be brought but ensure they are set up appropriately – the dunes we will be travelling across will cause a lot of stress on your vehicle and van.

No pets or firearms.

Meeting Place: Meet in Ouyen on the Friday morning at 9am (public toilets on the Calder Hwy, just after you enter Ouyen from the south). Note that Ouyen is a good 5 to 6 hours from Melbourne - you may want to consider going up on the Thursday.

Trip Leaders are Phill and Jane Collyer.
