Winter is here, and fingers are crossed for some heavy snow falls! Martin Skinner and Stuart Sheppard are planning a weekend driving and camping in the snow, resurrecting a trip that John Hasler used to run a few years back.
Meeting Time & Place:
8:45 for 9:00am departure from Licola General Store (245 km from Melbourne). The general store has a camping ground for those that choose to arrive Friday night.
Trip Classification: Moderate, but cold!
Vehicle Limit: 8 vehicles
Radio: UHF Channel 15
Maps: To be notified.
Essentials:
Vehicle in sound mechanical condition, suited to cold temperatures. Front and rear recovery points, snatchum strap, shackles, shovel, plus other recovery gear, spares as required, all terrain tyres or better with at least 8mm of tread. Clothing and camping gear for cold and wet conditions. Water and food for overnight camping. First aid gear and personal medication as needed.
Be prepared to run very low tyre pressures in the snow (just like sand dune driving). Tyre chains if conditions become icy. Full tank ex-Licola.
Trip Notes:
After local advice on snow conditions, we will proceed from Licola to either the Gorge Carpark (Mt. Tamboritha) or Mt Skene. Travelling over snowbound roads, we will select a site suitable for snow activities and overnight camp. Accommodation will be in tents or in the back of your vehicle Saturday night.
Opportunity for cross-country skiing will be available on Saturday and Sunday. Igloo/snow cave building on Saturday if you are keen.
Return to Melbourne may be via Licola, Jamieson or Matlock depending on road conditions. Round trip (Melbourne to Melbourne) approx 650km. Up to 70 km of snow driving, depending upon conditions.
Trip Leaders: Martin Skinner & Stuart Sheppard.
