At the last meeting Phill Collyer announced that he and Jane are running a Simpson Desert trip in July. Here is initial notice of the trip to allow people to plan, sign up and start their preparation. This should be a classic RRCV Outback trip with two of our most experienced Trip Leaders...
Trip Leader(s) : Phill and Jane Collyer
Trip Classification : Medium to Hard (depends on non-seasonal rains)
Vehicle Limit : 10 vehicles – sorry no trailers
Meeting Time & Place: Leave Port Augusta for Simpson Desert on Sunday 6 July finishing within a day of Melbourne at the latest Saturday 19 July (subject to Acts of God)
Radio UHF: Channel to be confirmed
Essentials : Vehicle in sound mechanical condition (the roads/tracks will vary from bad corrugations to washouts, plenty of dust, saltpans) – your vehicle will need special preparation (tell your mechanic where you are going and that he has to come and recover you at his cost if you break down – hopefully that will get his attention!-) and you should carry appropriate spares.
Good sense of humour. Adventurous nature
Trip Notes :
The trip will be a mix of bush camping, caravan parks and campgrounds. We will visit Andamooka, Oodnadatta, Birdsville, Maree traveling on the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. Within the Simpson Desert, we will visit Dalhousie Springs, Purnie Bore, Lone Gum Tree, Poepell’s Corner, Approdinga Attora Knolls and Big Red.
A Desert Parks pass will be required – currently $90 (less if renewing). The Desert Parks pass comes with a number of relevant maps. Do NOT get your pass until it is confirmed you are on the trip (campfire chat has indicated that this may be a popular trip).
We will be in a remote area of Australia – depending on your vehicle, you may need to carry extra fuel. Spares will need to be carried.
Drinking water will need to be carried for at least 5 days travel. The Simpson Desert is becoming very popular – we cannot rely on firewood for cooking – you should carry sufficient cooking gas/fuel for your own needs.
No pets or firearms.
More detail will be available later – if interested, log in and use the online trip booking to sign up, email the Trip Coordinator or contact Phill or Jane. You need to start your preparation now.
