Mid Week Lunch Run

Start: 28 Mar 2012 - 00:30

End: 28 Mar 2012 - 17:00

The Mid-week Lunch Run
Wednesday, March 28 2011

This is the ultimate soft trip. Once per month we shall meet at around 9.30am for a journey into various regional areas for a “country lunch” and a look around the region. The aim is to drive for no more than two hours, have a stop for morning tea during the journey and enjoy lunch before getting back to Melbourne by 5.00pm.
Areas of interest will include the Bellarine Peninsula, South Gippsland, Castlemaine, Tahbilk/Nagambie, etc etc. BUT please don’t expect an in-depth tour of the region – this is for an overview and lunch.

Trip Leaders
Christine and Alan Hawkes
Mob 0419 744832

Description	A day out for lunch

Trip Standard	Easiest – use whichever car needs a run in the country

Meeting Time: 9.30 am on the dates in the heading.
Meeting place: Burvale Hotel car park, cnr Burwood Rd and Springvale Rd, Nunawading
Convoy Limit: For the first one, no limit to apply, but the capacity of the lunch location might restrict trip numbers in later trips.
Fuel	Please have a full tank at the start. Stopping for people to get fuel is a bore.
Equipment	A camera might be a good idea.

Please put your details in the trip book. We have to match numbers with the lunch location.

Ian Baseby from Range Rover Club of NSW is compiling a register of businesses throughout Australia who can repair Land Rover products. Many of us travel through across the country and other States, and if something happens to the vehicle where do we turn?

He'd appreciate names and addresses and phone numbers where known of these businesses from Coffs to Cunnunura, from Googs to Gladstone, from the Alice to Arkaroola. it's not just the big dealers, but the independents in small country towns who can help with older vehicles.

Only condition here is they attend a OH&S briefing on Saturday & sign the register.

Dates: 4th -5th February Arrival time: any time Friday afternoon 3rd February onwards

Camping place: Specially marked & reserved space next to Fry's Hut. Space for Caravan, Camper Trailer & Tents,

Toilets: Public long drop,

Meals etc: Self catered. BYO everything incl water

Number or people required: 12-14…

Any individual or 4x4 Clubs interested are requested to contact your Association to record their interest and they can then contact one of the following Hut Association members in order of preference.

Markus Richardson (HMO for area) email…markusr@optusnet.com.au

Rubicon - Marysville Ramble

Start: 26 Feb 2012 - 00:30

End: 26 Feb 2012 - 16:30

A medium trip touring the Rubicon area, making our way through to Marysville and ending at Narbethong. Along the way we will visit the Rubicon early hydro-power stations, make our way to Keppel Hut, go through Marysville to Keppel Lookout and finish in Narbethong.

Snatch-strap and rated shackles should be brought along and be prepared to lower your tyre pressures. If there is a lot of rain in the days before the trip, the itinerary may change.

A full tank of fuel ex-Melbourne should suffice.

Meeting place is the public park, just to the south of Buxton on the Maroondah Highway.

Meeting time is 8:30am, ready to leave.

If you are running late or cannot make it, please call the trip leaders on 0407096295.

Communications will be on UHF channel 10.

Bring a picnic lunch and your morning tea; you may want to bring chairs or a picnic rug. Also don't forget your sense of humour!

We will be in the bush with most likely no public facilities - bring your shovels and toilet bags and drinking water.

Weather can be changeable - from hot to cold very quickly - ensure hats and warm clothing are brought.

Trip Leaders are Jane and Phill Collyer.

If trip is full, please send email to the trip coordinator in case the numbers are increased or someone drops out early

Dargo/Waterford 2012

Start: 9 Mar 2012 - 00:00

End: 12 Mar 2012 - 23:59

What more can be said about Dargo? The RRCV classic event held on Labour Day for the past 20(?) years. If you haven't been before, we generally get between 30 and >40 cars for the weekend. Trips are organised for Saturday, Sunday & Monday. Standard is variable so pick & choose where you want to go & who you want to go with.

This is a Base Camp for 3 nights: Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Bring your own tent, camper or caravan. Some on-site vans are available as is a cabin if you are quick. If you wish to come early or stay longer please let the trip leader know and he will notify the proprietors.
Dargo is approached via Princes Highway through Sale & Stratford. Approx. 23 km past Stratford turn to Fembank, follow signs to Dargo. Take care on Dargo road especially if towing.
For the Saturday night dinner, NO spit roast is planned but we would like to have people coming to a common area with their meals or for after dinner drinks – this has always been a great gathering and a sharing of yarns and we would like that to continue.
The Annual Cricket Match – “The Rovers versus the Rabble” - takes place on Sunday afternoon.
Trips – the Dargo area has a lot of history to it as well as very spectacular scenery with great tracks. Trips will be decided closer to the weekend when weather and track conditions are known but there will be different trips occurring each day.
Park Amenities are hot showers, toilets, pwd. sites, gas BBQ, fuel, basic stores, good swimming in Wonangatta River. It is recommended that you bring your own drinking water as all water at the park comes from the river and depending on rains, the water may be a little dirty.

If you are interested then book your names in now - we would like to know when you plan to arrive and depart (usually Friday and Monday) and whether you need a powered site (if you do, please bring a long extension lead).

NT Trip

Start: 23 Jun 2012 - 00:00

End: 17 Jul 2012 - 23:59

It appears there is not much member interest in this trip!

Anyway we will probably run it as a private trip if anyone would like to talk about our plans then you are welcome to chat to us at Dargo.

We are now looking at doing a four (originally five) week trip around June/July 2012. Plans are firming up and we are currently looking at visiting the following places.

Mataranka (NT)
Gove Peninsula (NT - Arnhem Land)
Kakadu NP (NT)
Litchfield NP (NT)
Gregory NP (NT)

There will be a mix of remote camping and camping with facilities.

We will be taking an off road camper trailer so camper trailers are welcome BUT they must be a genuine off road design capable of prolonged rough outback travel.

As some areas require entry permits with names and car registrations, trip participants will have to be finalized early in 2012 to allow sufficient time for the permit application process.

This trip will be restricted to 6 vehicles.

We will be at Dargo.

Mark and Janice.

Oxfam Xmas tree deliveries

Start: 3 Dec 2011 - 00:00

End: 3 Dec 2011 - 23:59

Over the last 17 years member clubs of the Four Wheel Drive Victoria (including RRCV) have supported Oxfam Australia in their annual delivery of Christmas Trees. This has become a very successful fund raising activity selling and delivering fresh green Christmas trees to homes in metropolitan Melbourne.

The delivery date this year for RRCV is Saturday 3rd December. Bob Wilson has coordinated this event for the club for many years and has kindly volunteered to do it again.

Volunteers carry out the whole operation. Last year over $126,000 was raised, that's about $500 per delivery vehicle, and went towards alleviating poverty and social injustice within Australia and overseas. That's a total of over $95,000 raised by members of Victorian Four Wheel Drive Clubs.

We ask for drivers, navigators and vehicles that can carry 8 to 25 freshly cut trees, with or without a trailer. This is a fun activity that makes a considerable contribution to the larger community in which we live.

We meet at the Scout Hall, Pakenham St., Blackburn (Melway Map 47 H 12) and deliver to the south and eastern side of Melbourne. You pick the area to which you would like to deliver the trees, and the time (before 11am) you arrive at the depot. You are given a very well organized list of addresses with Melway grid references, all in close proximity to each other. All you do is drop off the tree that has already been paid for. The smiles you receive from the younger recipients would be second only to that of them greeting Santa Claus. It will take each team 1 to 3 hours.

Last year Four Wheel Drive Victoria threw its weight behind the event and in the past has managed to attract television news coverage of the great work being done by club volunteers.

For those club members who may like to purchase a delivered Christmas tree please feel free to online orders: www.fitzroyoxfam.org.au or telephone 9497 3227. Orders start early November.

If you are volunteering your services, we need the following details for each volunteer.

Home suburb
Special requests or areas
Vehicle type - Ute=Ute; TRS=small to med trailer; TRL=tandem trailer; RR=roofrack; SW=station wagon/4wd; TT=Tray truck/ute
Max number of trees
Please include this information when you signup.

The Mid-week Lunch Run
Wednesday, February 15 2011

This is the ultimate soft trip. Once per month we shall meet at around 9.30am for a journey into various regional areas for a “country lunch” and a look around the region. Areas of interest will include the Bellarine Peninsula, South Gippsland, Castlemaine, Tahbilk/Nagambie, etc etc. BUT please don’t expect an in-depth tour of the region – this is for an overview and lunch.

Mid-Week lunch run

Start: 26 Oct 2011 - 09:30

End: 26 Oct 2011 - 17:00

The Mid-week Lunch Run
Wednesday, October 26 2011
Wednesday, November 23, 2011
Wednesday, February 15 2011

This is the ultimate soft trip. Once per month we shall meet at around 9.30am for a journey into various regional areas for a “country lunch” and a look around the region.

Meeting Time and Place	9.30 am on the dates in the heading.
Meet in the North West corner of Doncaster Shoppingtown car park, adjacent to Williamson’s Road, Doncaster.
Convoy Limit
For the first one, no limit to apply, but the capacity of the lunch location might restrict trip numbers in later trips.
Fuel	Please have a full tank at the start. Stopping for people to get fuel is a bore.
Equipment	A camera might be a good idea.

Please book in via the web site. We have to match numbers with the lunch location.

The latest article on Michael Bishop's excellent Land Rover News and History Blog covers how the desire for a more comfortable 4x4 in the 60s emerged as the Range Rover. Also talks about the first Range Rover in Australia, including mention of RRCV member Ian Duddy and a pic of RR1 at our 40th Anniversary event last year.

Coffin Bay / Lincoln National Park

Start: 29 Dec 2011 - 00:00

End: 8 Jan 2012 - 23:59

A regular trip for club members at this time of year. The Eyre Peninsula showcases great beach side locations for camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, 4WD sand driving and just having a great time.

This will be a very informal trip. Due to space restrictions at Memory Cove that part of the trip is limited to 7 vehicles.

The plan is to spend a few days at Coffin Bay National Park, then a couple of nights at Lincoln National Park before heading to Memory Cove for 3 nights 5th - 8th Jan. The Memory Cove sites are booked and we have the whole camp to ourselves.

If you want to stay in the area longer or make it part of an extended trip then feel free & let me know as others may be keen on that also.

We are planning to arrive at Pt Lincoln on 29th Dec, get our permits etc and head for Coffin Bay. (Permits cost $61 for a SA Holiday Pass, which covers SA National Parks including entrance fees & camping state wide). Others can arrive earlier or later, depending on your commitments.

This is beach camping with limited facilities, so you need to be self sufficient for at least 3-4 days. Weather is generally good but can be hot or cold (it is Southern Australia), so be prepared. I'll map out details closer to the time.

If you are interested then book your names in now & I'll be in touch.

the trip is now full, but please let me know you are interested and I will keep a waiting list in case somebody drops out.

Lake Eildon Fishing and camping weekend

Start: 25 Nov 2011 - 19:00

End: 27 Nov 2011 - 17:00

Weekend Sat 26th and Sun 27th November 2011 Base camping. Trailers welcome.

The lake is 98% full for the first time in many years so the place is ideal for a weekend away.. We will be fishing and 4WDing for those that want to do so.

Staying at The Pines area near Gough’s Bay. The area is made for camping with tents, camper trailers etc. so bring the family.

Fishing is possible from the banks. We are taking at least 2 boats and more are welcome. If you have a kayak or canoe it will be the ideal place to bring it. Launch it from right in front of your tent. What could be better. 4WDing will happen on demand and the region is well know for tracks from easy to hard so you can do whatever you like! Howqua River Road is very close and gives access to all you need!

If fishing or 4wding is not what you want to do..…consider sitting on the lake edge reading…. or watching your kids ride on mountain bikes. It is up to you!

A campfire session will be on the agenda for Saturday night.

No numbers limit.

Driving time to Gough’s Bay is 2 ¼ from Doncaster via Mansfield. Carey and I are going up on Friday night so those that want to meet us can do so at Gough’s Bay at 6.00pm Friday 25th Nov

Trip Leaders Viv Chopping (0408 900 003) Carey Nichol

See attached photos Camping on the edge of the Delatite Arm of Lake Eildon.

This region can be approached several ways (we are after all a 4WD Club!!) but in this instance the leaders are going:

From Melbourne…. via Mansfield. Driving time = 2 ¼ hrs from Doncaster.

From Mansfield head towards Mt Buller. Turn right 3kms from the Caltex servo onto the Jamieson Road

On the Jamieson Road travel 9kms and turn right onto the Goughs Bay Rd at the CFA in Piries

On the Goughs Bay Road travel 7kms to an intersection of Goughs Bay, Howes Creek and Walshes Roads.

Follow Walshes Road for 8.7 kms until you get to a sign designating Picnic Point camping area.

Set up camp, ….get your chair out, ….relax!!!!

No numbers limit. Camper Trailers….. even Caravans are suitable! Boat launching is very easy…… right in front of our campsite!

Parks/State Forest toilets are situated in the camp area Campsites in the region are on a ‘first come first served’ basis. If we fail to get our preferred site we have identified several other suitable sites. To pass this message on look on the Parks notice board along Walshes Road. Please look there for information.
Land Rover History - a new Book "They Found Our Engineer" and a Land Rover News and History Blog

Australian Engineer and Land Rover Enthusiast, Michael Bishop, has sent us a Press Release about his recentlly published book - They Found Our Engineer: The Story of Arthur Goddard, The Land Rover’s First Engineer. He's also the author of a very popular Land Rover News and History Blog.

Australians Discover Original Designer of Land Rover

Engineer who led first design team for vehicle reappears in Australia after being forgotten.

DROITWICH WORCESTERSHIRE, England – Certain vehicles are iconic; the Willy’s Jeep of World War II, or the clean lines of the Rolls-Royce. The British Land Rover is another of these vehicles, and in They Found Our Engineer: The Story of Arthur Goddard, The Land Rover’s First Engineer (published by AuthorHouse) author Michael Bishop takes readers through one phase of the famous vehicle’s history.

[They were] very much the Land Rover we know and love. People, however; would ask questions such as, “Wasn’t it supposed to have Central Steering?”
and “Was it just a stop gap?”

There was very little knowledge about how the model range evolved into what we still know and appreciate today with multiple wheelbases and body styles. That was until Arthur reappeared in 2009.

They Found Our Engineer begins just after World War II and finishes in Brisbane, in modern-day Australia. It discusses the early career of Arthur Goddard, who led the original development of the Land Rover in 1947-1948 for The Rover Car Company of Birmingham, England.

Covering all aspects of the Land Rover’s development and early history, as recorded from conversations with Goddard himself in 2009, They Found Our Engineer is a fascinating look into the history of this iconic vehicle, including Goddard’s presentation of one to Queen Elizabeth II in 1954. Australian Land Rover enthusiasts Alex Massey and Michael Bishop rediscovered Goddard, by chance living and still working in Brisbane during 2009.

About the Author

Michael Bishop is an Australian who has been driving and collecting Land Rovers since he was a teenager in Melbourne. He has collected and restored many of the rare early models. His interest in the early models led to him researching the history of the Rover and how the car evolved technically in the first years of its development. This research led to him writing articles about his findings in club and classic car magazines. He was one of the first to publish Land Rover technical articles on the Internet in the 1990s, and his passion for motoring goes well beyond his own area of expertise.

TASMANIA SOUTH EAST & WEST COAST

Start: 27 Dec 2011 - 09:00

End: 13 Jan 2012 - 16:00

Start: Tuesday 27 Dec @ Coles Bay / Freycinet Peninsula

End: Friday 13 Jan at Cradle Mtn (start and end points can be a bit flexible if you can't make the whole trip...but preference will be given to people that can make all or most of the trip)

Trip Classification: Easy to Medium standard with some harder sections, weather dependant of course.

This is off road trailer and family friendly. There will be some 4wd trips run along the West Coast beaches, which can be unpredictably dangerous at times. A couple of vehicles per year are lost to quicksand. We will take precautions, but there remains some risk still.

Fuel: No excessive distances between fuel stops.

Water and Supply: Available at many stops. See detailed itinerary. 3 days maximum time between (limited) supermarket opportunities.

Meeting Place: You can either join us at Freycinet on the 27th, or further along the itinerary. Note that the itinerary might vary according to the weather conditions at the time.

Detailed Itinerary: Gareth can send you a draft detailed itinerary, but it currently goes something like this:

Freycinet & Tasman Peninsula - (optional Bruny Is) on the South East Coast from 27-31 Dec. Emphasis on walking, fishing and snorkelling and kayaking opportunities. New Years Eve and the Food and Wine Festival in Hobart. Up to Queenstown for some inland rainforest and mountain drives, then across to the rugged West Coast (Granville Harbour surrounds and Sandy Cape surrounds) for a few days coastal driving. In the middle we might stop in at Savage River (middle of the Tarkine Wilderness, the largest temperate rainforest in the Southern Hemisphere, ex-mining town, now a ghost town, revegetated 15 years ago), to try to find the site of the home I grew up in. The trip will then move across to Cradle Mtn for some day bushwalking. We'll have 2-3 nights at each location, and the aim will be to strike a balance between "active" activities and driving days.

Alternative Routes: If the weather is looking very bad on the West Coast, we'll likely spend longer in the South East, and maybe move up to the North East instead.

Vehicle and Equipment: Vehicle's to be in sound mechanical condition. The weather can be unpredictable, so please make sure you have suitable clothing and camping equipment. West Coast in particular can be cold and windy. Snorkel advisable on vehicle.

Note that camping sites on the West Coast sections have no facilities, so camping shower might be a good option. We'll be taking along our own drop toilet and a privacy tarp. Paint protection is a good idea if you're precious about your paintwork. Many Tassie tracks are 3/4 the width of the average vehicle!

Recovery Gear: Snatchem strap (extra long could be worthwhile...), shackles, winch if you have one. Long Handle spade. Traction aids (eg Max Trax) if you have them.

Tyres: Good tyres are important, since we'll be a couple of days drive from good tyre repair or replacement options. Some tracks have sharp rocks after sand sections, so tyre wall damage is a distinct possibility.

Communication: UHF radio, channel 15. Very patchy phone coverage in many Tas locations, especially if you aren't with Telstra.

Maps: A long list of Tasmaps. Options aren't fantastic in this regard.

Convoy limit: 6 vehicles

Trip Leaders: Gareth Brown

Enquiries: email Gareth: sg-brown@bigpond.com

Great Aussie Camp Out

Start: 15 Oct 2011 - 00:00

End: 15 Oct 2011 - 23:59

The Great Aussie Camp Out is back.

After the huge success of thousands of people participating in the experience of camping out for a night under the stars in 2010, The Great Aussie Camp Out (GACO) returns on Saturday 15 October 2011.

We surround ourselves today with so much clutter and technology that sometimes it is essential that we take a step back and connect with the simple things in life and what a better way for us all to do so than spend a night out camping.

In the last quarter of a century we have cushioned ourselves away from the natural environment, especially with our children. We are spending more time indoors in front of the television and computers and we are forgetting how to connect with our natural world.

So, camp in your backyard, on a river bank, at a campsite, Caravan Park, on a farm, in one of the hundreds of National Parks - in fact almost anywhere you feel like! No camp site is too big or small to spend the night camping out and just having fun with family, friends or just about anyone you can possibly think of. GACO will again bring thousands of Australians (and visitors) to share in the wonderful experience of camping. We may even break the Guinness Book of Records for the most people camped out for a night!

To join or organise a camp out with friends, family, clubs, community groups or work colleagues on Saturday 15 October 2011 in this free Australia-wide outdoor annual event, register FREE at www.greataussiecampout.org.au Win prizes. Activities, games, recipes and much more! Have fun. Here we can also help you to plan your camp and with great tips, resources and ideas to keep you busy all night long.

Great Aussie Camp Out: ‘Getting more people outdoors more often’

RRCV Club members can arrange their own group involving family members, or get a group of club members together, or if you are interested in joining a club event then just register.

Cup Weekend - Camp Host opportunities

A message from FWDV: If there is any interest from Club members in running a camp host event then please register your name or contact one of the committee members:

Hello President’s, Secretary’s and Delegate’s,
Please consider conducting a Camp Host event for the upcoming Melbourne Cup weekend, at one of the sites listed on the attached form which has not yet been booked.

As you will see, there are quite a number of sites open to us for use, some regular sites along with some relatively new sites which have been offered and included in the list. We are continually working with the DSE and PV Rangers trying to branch out into new areas, so if you have a particular favourite location which has a worthwhile traffic flow, please let us know and we will endeavour to add it to our growing list.
I look forward to your positive replies in this case as the time is slipping away and the Melbourne Cup weekend will be on us before we know it.
Regards,
Celebrating 30 Years of Running Trips

Start: 4 Nov 2011 - 00:00

End: 6 Nov 2011 - 23:59

After joining the Land Rover Owners Club of Victoria in 1976, John Hasler commenced running 4WD club trips for the LROCV in 1981 with a trip featuring the Walhalla Railway. As John’s 4WD network grew he subsequently joined the Range Rover Club of Australia, Victoria Branch, Pajero 4WD Club of Victoria and the Victorian Mobile Landcare Group.

Organising over 200 club trips in these 30 years, travelling with many hundreds of club members and their families, he has visited mountains and rivers, goldfields and beaches, observed regeneration after bushfires and whales at play, traversed the Australian Alps and the Blue Mountains, explored limestone caves and stood on the tops of remote mountains, inspected volcanoes and camped in the snow, marveled at the elusive Australian fauna, travelled the Canning Stock Route and traversed the Simpson Desert many times, followed in the steps of Burke and Wills, investigated Australia’s history, crossed Australia from West to East with Mike and Margie Leyland, photographed (probably) millions of Australian plants and flowers, inspected remote ruins and explored the forests and deserts looking for relics of years gone by.

To commemorate three decades of 4WD club journeys we invite past participants of trips, fellow club members, fellow driver training instructors and other club members associated with Four Wheel Drive Victoria and FWDV Associate members to celebrate these trips and all other trip leaders with us.

GME 80 Channel Upgrade Instructions

Peter Dwyer from Telstat came to the June General Meeting and gave us a great update about the 80 channel UHF rollout. He showed us the new 80 channel units from both GME and Uniden and recounted first hand experience with a mix of 40 and 80 channel radios on a trip convoy.

Peter let us know that certain GME 40 channel models can be upgraded to 80 channels - some self upgraded and some through a dealer, such as Telstat, for low cost. GME have published information about the models and process on their website at http://www.gme.net.au/news/2011/05/31/80-channel-upgrade-instructions/32

There is some great info for powners of recent model GME radios:

The ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority) have recently released a new class licence allowing UHF CB radios to operate on a new 80 channel narrow band standard.

In December 2010, in preparation for this new standard, GME began building UHF CB radios that complied with both the original 40 channel wideband standard and the new 80 channel narrowband standard. This allowed customers to purchase ‘future proofed’ 40 channel radios prior to the release of the new standard that could be switched to the new 80 channel standard once it was mandated. As of June, 2011, owners of compatible radios can now operate on the new 80 channel narrow band channels.

GME radios that are 80-channel compatible can be easily identified by an ’80 Channel Upgradable’ sticker on the packaging and by the following serial number prefixes.

Lake Eyre, Birdsville/Big Red and Corner Country Meander

Start: 2 Oct 2011 - 08:30

End: 13 Oct 2011 - 09:00

This is a leisurely 13 day meander, including the return journeys from Melbourne, taking in good outback driving on iconic tracks (Oodnadatta, Birdsville, Cordillo Downs) and once in a lifetime opportunity to see Lake Eyre in flood and desert in bloom as well as the history of Burke and Wills. It is designed to allow time to explore each stop and take in some camping grounds with toilets and hot shower facilities, not to mention a few iconic pubs.

LAKE EYRE, BIRDSVILLE/BIG RED CHALLENGE & CORNER COUNTRY MEANDER

Start: Sunday 2 Oct 2011 – 0830 from Melbourne (Or meet us in Mildura 3 Oct – 0830)

End: Thursday 13 Oct 2001 – 0900 @ Woomera (Thursday & Friday 14 Oct – return to Melbourne)

Organisers: Winston Chong & Viv Chopping

Trip Classification: Easy to Medium standard with some harder sections, weather dependant of course. This is off road trailer / camper van friendly.

Cooper Creek Ferry. If we need to cross Cooper Creek (147 km north of Marree) on the Birdsville Track by Ferry, note conditions for trailers @ SA Govt website.

Fuel: Longest distance without fuel stop is from Innamincka to Birdsville (417 km)

Water and Supply: Available at many stops. See detailed itinerary.

Meeting Place: You can either join us in Melbourne on 2 Oct (place to be decided) or meet us at the Mildura camping ground on Oct 3.

Detail Itinerary: Winston and Viv have the detailed itinerary on a spreadsheet if anyone is interested. We will email it to you.

Departing Mildura, we will visit Broken Hill with its many attractions including Silverton (Mad Max Country) and the Living Desert.

Driving into Corner Country, we will see reminders of Burke and Will’s disastrous expedition at Depot Glen, Poole's grave, Sturt's Cairn on Mount Poole, Burke's and Wills Graves, Nappa Merrie, and the Dig Tree. Other features include the Moomba Fields and Dog Fence.

At Birdsville, we will camp for 2 nights and organise a Big Red challenge! This will provide a glimpse of the Simpson Desert, but as we are not going further in, there is no need for a desert pass.

Lake Eyre has only filled with water 3 times in the last 150 years. This is once in a life time opportunity. Going to the Lake via the Oodnadatta Track, we will visit and camp near Lake Eyre South, and then drive via William Creek and camp in Haligan Bay, Lake Eyre North. This is the best vantage point from the ground.

On the way back, we will visit Roxby Downs, Adamooka and Woomera. Then back to Melbourne.

Alternative Routes: If the tracks North of Innamincka are still flooded by October, the alternative is to divert via the Strzelecki Track to Lyndhurst, bypassing Birdsville and onto Lake Eyre.

Vehicle and Equipment: Vehicle's to be in sound mechanical condition, i.e.: batteries, starter motor and driveline. The weather can be unpredictable, so please make sure you have suitable clothing and camping equipment. Please carry food and water for the trip, and don’t forget your favourite bottle of wine. Many iconic pubs along the route for lunch/dinner.

Recovery Gear: Snatchem strap, shackles, winch if you have one and a sense of humour. Long Handle spade. Traction aids (eg Max Trax) if you have them

Tyres: Good tyres are important. Consider 2 spares. Sand Flags.

Communication: UHF radio, channel 15. There should be one Satellite phone and/or HF radio and/or EPIRB amongst the group

Maps: Hema Great Desert Maps or equivalent. GPS.

Convoy limit: 6 vehicles.

Trip Leaders: WInston & Diedre Chong

Enquiries: email to Winston Chong or Viv Chopping

Butcher Country

Start: 11 Jun 2011 - 00:00

End: 13 Jun 2011 - 16:00

Butcher Country has become a RRCV Queen’s Birthday weekend tradition. Not just because the tracks close after this weekend, or that the river levels are coming up after the summer, but because the Howitt High Plains are likely to be dusted with snow. This year, a landslip between Howitt Road and King Billy that may cause a diversion, but otherwise traditions will prevail! Two nights under canvas, with the occasional modest cooking fire.

This is the last chance to see some of the best country that Victoria has to offer prior to the seasonal road closures.

Meeting place: Licola general store and campground - 9.00 am Saturday June 11th. Ross will camp Friday night at the Licola campground, others are welcome to do the same.

Trip standard: Medium - All Terrain tyres and snatch strap required.

Fuel: Full tanks at Licola. LPG not available.

Clothing: Be prepared for hot and quite cold conditions.

Itinerary: Saturday around Licola. Sunday just below the snow line of the Howitt High Plains. Two nights bush camping, finishing in Mansfield on Monday afternoon.

Convoy limit: Eight vehicles, due to the limitation of tent space at the mid point of our trip.

Trip leader: Ross Dean

Kogan GPS's cheap - build a poor mans Hema Navigator

I received an email from Kogan today, telling me their 6 inch GPSs are on special for the next two days. $149 until midnight thrusday 7 April. This is about $30 or $40 below normal price. Info here:

http://www.kogan.com.au/shop/kogan-EziNavG6-gps-6-bluetooth-2gb-memory/

These gadgets are very good installing and running OziExplorer. You simply install Oz and your maps on the Micro SD card and activate Ozi from the GPS's menu. I will be putting an article in Torque about how to do it - and it is much simpler than many other GPSs as there is no "hacking" involved.

If you are running Ozi on an old PDA (most PDAs are old by now) this is a good opportunity to upgrade.

Two comments. The street nav is not the best I have used and the screen is a bit subject to glare. The first is not much of an issue, as i use it for Ozi. And, the second is dealt with by making a plastic shade.

Another comment: The fact that it is on special probably means there is a new model coming out. The new model will probably be better - but it wont be this cheap!

Watch for my article in the next issue of Torque. And, will bring the unit in to the next club night. There is a pic below showing my unit running Ozi with the Melb 250K map on it.

cheers
steve

Rutherglen was first established in the 1860’s for gold mining. But in the end it was a case of the gold rush giving way to the grape rush. On this trip we will be looking for liquid gold...

Directions: from Hume Freeway take Corowa exit, follow signs to Rutherglen. When you meet the Murray Valley Highway, turn right into Rutherglen (3 hours from Melbourne).

On Saturday we may follow the Murray River via tracks (depending of state of tracks due to recent flooding) to visit and tour wineries. Sunday morning more wine tasting, possible visit to a working winery before finishing at lunch time.

Trip Standard: easy unless wet

Accommodation:
you will need to make your own reservations and accommodation arrangements. Some numbers to help

We will also have a big focus on getting some trips on the calendar for the next three to four months.

20th Anniversary of the Discovery in Australia, Blue Mountains

Start: 26 Feb 2011 - 00:00

End: 27 Feb 2011 - 16:00

Our colleagues at the RRCNSW have invited any RRCV members in the Blue Mountains in late Feb to join them in at a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Disco... Details are below - please contact Ian Baseby on vp@rangeroverclubnsw.asn.au if you have queries or to register.

RANGE ROVER CLUB of AUSTRALIA (NSW) Ltd
invites you to the

20th Anniversary of the Land Rover Discovery in Australia

at Paxina, near Capertee, NSW

26 - 27th February 2011

The Land Rover Discovery was launched to the Australian general public at the Melbourne Motor Show on February 27th, 1991. To celebrate 10 years of Land Rover Discovery in Australia in 2001, the Range Rover Club of NSW organised a very successful dinner at Dinner Plain in the Victorian High Country. This year we will celebrate under the stars closer to home at Paxina, near Capertee, courtesy of Club members Patrick and Margaret Sutcliffe.

The weekend will be a casual affair with camping for tents, swags, and campervans. Sorry, the entry track is not suitable for full caravans. You can arrive any time Saturday morning and leave as you wish on Sunday. A mud map is attached.

This weekend is for all Land Rover Discovery owners and those who wish they were. So whatever you drive, come along if you appreciate the finer points of the Discovery. Members of all Land Rover Clubs are invited to attend.

If you are coming, please register with Ian Baseby with number of people present in your party at vp@rangeroverclubnsw.asn.au. Please forward this on to anyone who may be interested in attending. There is no limit, but people must register to enable us to allocate space.

VENUE
Travel to Lithgow then take the main road to Mudgee. Upon arrival at Capertee (about ½ hour from Lithgow) turn right at Glen Davis Road, just after the service station towards Glen Davis. Travel 14 kms until you reach Paxina on the left side of the road half way down a long hill. Enter the gate (please close it) then follow the gravel track and take either the short track, turn left just before the homestead down to the valley, or the long track (better for campervans etc) past the homestead and sheds, out along the ridge and follow a rocky track in a wide left arc down to the valley.

TIME
The event is officially Saturday and Sunday only. If however you wish to arrive on Friday, please contact Ian Baseby at vp@rangeroverclubnsw.asn.au to make arrangements.

FACILITIES
Only two long drop toilets. Bring toilet paper.

WHAT TO BRING
You must be self sufficient. Bring warm clothing, a tarpaulin or similar in case it rains, your camping gear, food and drinking water. There will be a fire with plenty of coals for a camp oven. Don’t forget the camera with batteries or charger.

TRIPS
There are a couple of interesting short trips in the area with one leaving at 1.30pm on Saturday and the other on Sunday morning.

THE CELEBRATION
It is intended on Saturday night to toast the Land Rover Discovery with a glass of champagne. Bring your own glass or mug but the champagne will be supplied. We would like Saturday night dinner to be a Camp Oven cookout. Fire restrictions willing we will have a fire with coals. For that to be successful you will have completed your cooking by 7.00pm and have it ready to be served after the formal part of the evening. It will be great if everyone can eat at the same time because we will arrange tables around the campfire. The stars are spectacular at Paxina because there is no surrounding light.

COMMUNICATION
Your mobile phone will not work at the campsite. Climb a nearby mountain and it might. But we are only 14 kms from Capertee. We operate on UHF Channel 19.

CAMPERTRAILERS etc – welcome.

The committee looks forward to seeing you there.

Members

Things are ***OK in Tallarook

Start: 6 Feb 2011 - 00:00

End: 6 Feb 2011 - 17:00

The Tallarook State Forest is an area of 5100 hectares, quite heavily timbered with a network of tracks of different difficulties. It is north of Melbourne, just south of Seymour. From certain vantage points one can see the Goulburn River.

Trip Leaders Phill & Jane Collyer

Trip Standard : Easy to Medium – please ensure you bring your snatchem straps and shackles. There may be some challenging bits!

Fuel – full tank ex-Melbourne will suffice

Maps – Strath Creek 7923-4-2 (1:25000), Reedy Creek 7923-3-1 (1:25000) (Note it is a while since we have been to Tallarook SF - there are most likely some more up to date maps)

Food & water – bring your own picnic lunch, morning and afternoon teas. Bring your own water or other refreshments.

Clothing – It may rain or it can be fine (hey we’re not far from Melbourne and it has been a crazy summer thus far), so please bring appropriate clothing (including hats, sunscreen and insect repellant).

Communications – the convoy will be using UHF, channel 10.

Other – very few of our stops will have toilet facilities (if any), so bring your toilet shovel.

Meeting Point – Broadford, 74 km north of Melbourne, just off the Hume Hwy. We will meet at the Lions Park just before you cross over the creek (before you get to the pub). Mobile telephone reception may not be reliable – if you look like running late, please call our mobile (0407 096 294) by 8:45am. Please be there ready to leave by 9am. For those that are early, the township has a very nice bakery that also serves coffees etc.

Itinerary – Expect to let your tyres down appropriately. We have some ideas about where to go but we have not had time to survey the trip before the day and depending on rains etc, we may not attempt some tracks. Broadly the plan is to visit areas of the Tallarook State Forest - if time allows, we may also visit some areas of the Mt Disappointment State Forest.

Vehicle should be in good mechanical order.

Equipment – please bring your snatchem strap and shackles. Essential of course is a sense of humour and fun !-)

Wombat Wanderings

Start: 30 Jan 2011 - 09:00

End: 30 Jan 2011 - 17:00

The Wombat State Forest is an old logging and mining area which has interesting scenery and a variety of tracks.

We have not been to the Wombat State Forest for 2 years – there has been no time to survey this trip. One thing is that it is nearly always wet when in this area and given Victoria’s summer thus far, tracks could be wet in places. Make sure you have your recovery gear - minimum is a snatch strap and rated shackles. Toilets are few so be prepared for bush toilets.

Please bring your morning tea and a picnic lunch.

Trip Leaders Phill & Jane Collyer

Meeting Time & Place BP Service Station on the Western Freeway (south side), after Pykes Reservoir, before Ballan at 9:00am (fuel and breakfast available) - this is about an hour from Melbourne (if you get to Ballarat, then you have missed it). If refuelling or having breakfast, please allow enough time to be ready to depart at 9am.

Essentials Vehicle in sound mechanical condition; full tank ex-Melbourne; recovery gear as mentioned above.

Clothing The Wombat SF can be hot or cool - please ensure you bring clothing that suits and include insect repellant and sunscreen.

Disco 2 spares

Now that I have sold my Disco 2 I have no need for the following:

Cargo Barrier that was custom built to fit behind the drivers' seat. Also comes with a timber floor if you want to remove the rear seats for extra storage on long trips.

Storage unit with fridge slide & 2 drawers. a home made job, but very robust & quite light - easy to get in & out as needed

If you are interested in any of the above then give me a call and we can negotiate a suitable price.

Cheers,
Range Rover Day - RRCV Volunteers needed

Start: 13 Nov 2010 - 00:00

A key part of the Range Rover 40th Birthday celebrations is the "Range Rover Day" Show and Concours d'Elegance at Como Park North on Saturday 13 November. The show will have all Range Rover models on display and will feature the new Range Rover Evoque, direct from the Sydney Motor Show.

We need lots of volunteeers from the club to help us with activities on the day. We will need help with set up from 8.00 am, help with marshalling and parking cars, help with the club Sausage Sizzle, in the club tent and with cleanup at the end of the day.

Members who are participating in the weekend (and may even have a car on show) will be able to help during the day, as well as other members who will be in Melbourne on the weekend and can spare the club a couple of hours.

It's a great opportunity to come and see what should be an impressive show of classic, new, special and yet to be released Range Rovers.

If you can help please let us know, by email to web_admin@rangeroverclub.org.au or by logging in and signing up using the link below. If you have a preferred part of the day please add that to the comments.

Back to the Snowy River - Cup Weekend

Start: 30 Oct 2010 - 00:30

End: 2 Nov 2010 - 16:00

The Ramsdens and Perrins will be going back to the Snowy River area on Cup weekend to finish off their Easter trip – which had to be abandoned on the last day after too many punctures. The itinerary will include ‘The Playgrounds’ (the Cobberas trail and Ingeegoodbee track), but beyond that nothing has been worked out. We will probably just improvise when we are there – maybe the Bowen Trail +/- Mt Tingeringay.

There will be some challenging driving with steep, loose climbs and descents - if its dry. If its going to be wet, we may need to stay home! If anyone would like to take pot luck and come along, we would be very happy to have up to three other cars join us. Expect some spectacular scenery, fun driving, bush camping… and having to make do …

Meeting Place: We will be staying at the Rosedale Hotel(188km from Melbourne) on the Friday night – join us if you wish – or meet up on Saturday morning at 08:30.

Trip Standard: Medium to hard depending on weather conditions. All terrain tyres, snatch’em strap and shackles are essential. The trip won’t be suitable for camper trailers.

Fuel: We will fuel up on route in Omeo – this will have to last the whole weekend unless the garage in Seldom Seen happens to open.

Clothing: Be prepared for a variety of weather – including wet and cold conditions.

Camping: Expect to bush camp.

Convoy limit: Camping spaces may be limited so the convoy will be restricted to a maximum of five vehicles.

Trip leaders and TEC

Trip leaders: Andy Ramsden and Bill Perrin

Tail end Charlies: Melanie Ramsden and Julie Perrin

Booking: Essential – given the short notice, please call Andy or Melanie Ramsden. (Melanie's phone numbner is in Torque.)
