Description: The Aberfeldy Four Wheel Drive Track combines rich history, striking landscapes and 4WD touring.  It takes in the region’s significant gold fields, passing through some of the area’s most stunning landscapes, from rugged bush to spectacular mountain views.

The route we will take follows the original Aberfeldy track from the early 1800s, which was used as a transportation route for horse and carts during the gold rush.  Guided by more than 50 interpretative historic markers, we pass old mine shafts and relics of old huts where people lived, even an old cricket pitch where games would have been enjoyed by the hard-working miners.  Interpretation signs are en-route throughout the drive marking historic sites and remnants, such as the Red Jacket Cemetery and the old mines of Toombon.

Stretching about 180km, the Aberfeldy Track begins at the town of Erica and follows a figure-eight circuit around the town of Aberfeldy covering Jordan Valley Loop (Day 1) and the Donnellys Creek Loop (Day 2).  We will camp in the Donnellys Creek area on Saturday night.  Both areas are Easy – Medium 4WD tracks linked by an access road (Easy).  The trip will end at Walhalla on Sunday afternoon.  If time and weather permits we may also include side trips to the Hanging Rock Walking Track, Aberfeldy Crossing or White Star Township.

Trip standard:  Easy - medium with some rocky tracks and river crossings.

Equipment:  Well-maintained vehicle with low range, good clearance, good all terrain tyres, low range, 4WD and reasonable clearance.  Standard recovery gear including rated recovery points, snatch strap and shackles, dampener, and UHF radio (or one borrowed from the club).
